Steve Fennelly – Co-Founder, CEO
Steve Fennelly, a loving father of three children, started and managed his first successful construction company, Fennelly Construction, in 2000 while finishing a B.S. in Accounting and Finance from Albertus Magnus College. In 2004 he started A Plus C Quality Construction as addiction began to take over his life. Steve came to Southern California several years ago to begin his own recovery from intense drug addiction, personal and financial failure, and to reestablish broken family relationships. “One of the things that makes our program so successful is this personal knowledge and understanding of the life of an addict. I know addiction inside and out and I understand the addictive mind,” says Steve. “I’ve lived it! I have been to so many rehabs and treatment centers trying to get myself righted that I used to wonder if I was capable of recovery. I know what works and what doesn’t, and Elizabeth and I use all that we’ve personally learned about abusing substances to build an unparalleled program that really works. This is what drives me, it is my passion, it’s what gets me up each morning ready to begin a new day!”
Steve’s philosophy behind the vision and mission of Sure Haven entails having a calm, supportive, family-like living arrangement that allows women to concentrate on what must truly be concentrated on to find success in recovery – themselves. “I do not want to grow larger than my time allows me to personally respond to the needs and concerns of my clients and their families. This is a very critical part of the Sure Haven vision – this feeling of personalized care and concern and that the families know we are all in this together,” says Steve.

Elizabeth Perry – Co-Founder and Director
Elizabeth Perry is co-founder and marketing director of Sure Haven. With an extensive background in the marketing industry, Perry utilizes her sales and advertising prowess to undo misconceptions about drug and alcohol addiction amongst young women. She contends wholeheartedly that addiction requires sensitivity and is mistakenly considered shameful and taboo. “A big misconception in addiction and recovery is that alcohol and drugs are the problem. To the addict, drugs and alcohol are the ‘solution’ to the problem. The women we work with are hurting, they have used substances to ease that hurt, and we try to show them new, healthier solutions to their struggles,” says Perry.
It is Perry’s other work experience that led her to forming Sure Haven with partner Steve Fennelly. Her five year stint as a bartender exacerbated pre-existing problems with alcohol. Losing her job is what brought her to recovery. Through her bartending career she gained an insight into people, especially addicts and alcoholics; their patterns, behaviors, and thought processes. “The industry itself, exposed me to sides of human nature I had never experienced. A wonderful woman sober is a monster in her addiction,” says Perry. It is advocating Sure Haven’s vision everyday that motivates Perry. “Our vision when we started was to develop a program for women that is safe, supportive and healthy, and today it remains the same. To me, the excitement, the challenge, of what is possible in terms of revolutionizing not only the old model of treatment, but the marketing of that treatment is what invigorates me.

1. If you could have lunch with any one person (living or deceased) who would it be with?
Eleanor Roosevelt
2. Who is your hero?
Mother Theresa
3. Favorite quote about recovery?
“Change only happens when the pain of holding on is greater than the fear of letting go.”
4. What is your favorite “look-back-and-laugh” embarrassing moment from high school?
When I was a freshman there was a guy, Ray, I really liked. He was funny, smart and a little nerdy. I had enough courage to call him up one day, but not enough courage to actually say anything on the phone. I assumed he would just hang up since he was greeted with silence, but to my surprise he stayed on the line pretending he was having a conversation. He talked like someone was responding and was really funny in his fake dialogue. Then my brother picked up the other phone and said “Beth, you need to get off so I can make a call.” My cover was blown! Ray laughed and I knew I was caught, but he never said anything about it, so to this day I am convinced he never knew it was me.

As an author, college professor, and mentor to students and addiction industry professionals, he brings both humor and professional wisdom to the vocation. “I’m inspired to be in a field which is always changing,” says Brown. “New therapies, new medications and new insights are helping to fight the war of ever-emerging drug problems in our country which is beyond epidemic – it’s pandemic. We will not win the war on drugs at our borders or through law enforcement. We will win it in the trenches…one person at a time…with each person carrying the message to every person that suffers that there is a better and happier way to live.”

It is my responsibility to maintain that core clinical approach through our growth,” says Fowler. It’s his own personal experience with recovery, having been clean and sober since 1989, that continues to motivate him in helping young women through the process. “Nothing is more professionally and personally rewarding than watching a client change from the person they were…hopeless, desperate, and lost, into the person they would like to become. I personally know, and remember, how hard it is to get, and stay, clean and sober,” says Fowler.

Montazer has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from University of California, Los Angeles and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy.
